Criticisms of the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS-v1.1) Symptom Checklist Instructions

https://www.hcp.med.harvard.edu/ncs/asrs.php

1. How often do you have trouble wrapping up the final details of a project,
once the challenging parts have been done?

What kind of project? At work? making a bench? construction? a new math theorem?
What are "the final details?"
I assume this is looking at follow-through and unfinished projects.

2. How often do you have difficulty getting things in order when you have to do
a task that requires organization?
Define a task that requires organization. Cleaning your room?
Difficulty being motivated to do it or actual difficulty organizing?

3. 3. How often do you have problems remembering appointments or obligations?

Does anyone just "remember " to do such things? People use a calendar.

4. When you have a task that requires a lot of thought, how often do you avoid
or delay getting started?

What is an example of such a task? Writing a philosophical treatise? What sort of thought? Creative? Self-searching? Analytical?

5. How often do you fidget or squirm with your hands or feet when you have
to sit down for a long time?

How long? 6 hours? Do normal people remain motionless? WHat is the baseline of normal movement when sitting ?

6. How often do you feel overly active and compelled to do things, like you
were driven by a motor?

I have never understood what this is supposed to mean. Like you are not in control of yourself?

A nice circular definition "This is used to describe people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder when they talk excessively: 'they act as if driven by a motor.'"

7. How often do you make careless mistakes when you have to work on a boring or
difficult project?

Does anyone actually keep track of this? How do we know the mistakes are careless and not just human error? What if people's self assessment here is inaccurate?

8. How often do you have difficulty keeping your attention when you are doing boring
or repetitive work?

Again, who is measuring this? And doesn't everyone do this? If it's boring, by definition it doesn't hold people's attention.

9. How often do you have difficulty concentrating on what people say to you,
even when they are speaking to you directly?

Doesn't this depend on the message and how it is being spoken? Does anyone concentrate on idle gossip and complaining?

10. How often do you misplace or have difficulty finding things at home or at work?

Define "often". This may also be affected by other people in each location.

11.How often are you distracted by activity or noise around you?

What kind of activity and noise? WInd chimes? Someone screaming FIRE?

12. How often do you leave your seat in meetings or other situations in which
you are expected to remain seated?

Inappropriate question for adults. Does anyone "expect" that people remain seated at meetings?

13.How often do you feel restless or fidgety?

Just very vague question.

14. How often do you have difficulty unwinding and relaxing when you have time
to yourself?

With or without alcohol? Define "time to yourself".

15. How often do you find yourself talking too much when you are in social situations?

If people know they are talking too much why are they doing it? Could it be that they are, and are not aware of it? Then this question will be a false negative.

16. When you’re in a conversation, how often do you find yourself finishing
the sentences of the people you are talking to, before they can finish
them themselves?

Not sure what to say about this one - is this pathological?

17. How often do you have difficulty waiting your turn in situations when
turn taking is required?

Do any adults really have this problem, adhd or no? Define "have difficulty" - are they cutting the line?

18. How often do you interrupt others when they are busy?

If someone knew they did this a lot why would they be doing it? Maybe a better question is"DO you have trouble knowing when someone is busy?"
