Sugar is not a Good Activity for Children

We care about the health of our children. So why do we provide them with so many opportunities to indulge in sugary foods?
Perhaps it is because we have long had a culture in which sweet treats are seen as an innocent indulgence that children quickly "burn off" with their active lifestyles. In previous decades we demonized saturated fat and fat in general as a poison that was harmful to health. Recent evidence has supported the notion that sugar is actually worse for health at any age. If we invited our children to "baconfest" where they consumed as much bacon as possible, or had them eat spoonfuls of lard, we would feel as if it would be better if this did not have to occur. However, at many children's events I have attended, there is almost always some form of sugar for children to consume, typically at levels that are considered unhealthy.
There is an amount of sugar that is moderate and probably not very harmful, say perhaps a very small cookie with 3 grams of sugar, as an occasional reat. What we provide these days for children is a pile of large cookies on a plate, (help yourself!) and to wash it down, a 12 ounce soda or juice(more sugar). We seem to have a difficult time imagining children's activities that do not include a large dose of sugar. Really, food in general need not be a part of every children's event either, even if it's healthy (carrots).
Sugar has acute behavioral effects but these are seen as temporary and harmless. If something like this happens frequently, one must consider chronic effects. Many Americans grew up in a sugar culture, and it is difficult to deny the nostalgia and joy associated with candy and baked treats. We soften with warmth to think of Grandma teaching us how to make Rice Krispie treats in the kitchen, or baking Christmas cookies. Maybe if we only consumed cookies at Christmas they would not be such a problem, but really the opportunity for treats and sweets seems to be around every corner these days.

The devil of anxiety will find work for idle minds to do

The devil of anxiety will find work for idle minds to do

Let's just say we have free will - "we can do whatever we can" (ie we cannot fly by willpower alone)
If you throw a rock down a cliff - does it go wherever it wants to go?

The dread and anxiety is feeling as if you have control, you have free will, because it puts on presume that you must make the right decisions.

On Prince

Prince was a modern Mozart. Except he looked much better and could dance. He made music look incredibly fun. He bent gender and bent what it meant to be a rock-star, and was a true original. Even though he is dead, thank goodness we still have his music to listen to. He would be more influential if any of the current music scene could even approach his talents. Who now can hold a candle to him?

"But two months dead—nay, not so much, not two.
So excellent a king, that was to this
Hyperion to a satyr. "
Shakespeare HAMLET

Obesity is not directly the problem - the problem is unhappiness, which can be caused by poor health. Also, unhappiness can lead to trying to get happy by eating which can lead to more obesity etc..

Human's are complex systems and we cannot look at just the biological aspect while ignoring the personality. In this sense, in addition to biological variation of metabolism, we also should consider that different techniques will work for different personalities. Everyone needs their own unique plan for health and obesity reduction.

Most importantly we have to find a food lifestyle that we will be willing to stick with for the long term.

Processed Foods

Let your body do the processing of food rather than eating food that has already been processed.

ie. buy food from the produce section.

Not that this is really a secret!

An act of kindness, or of cruelty, will be remembered.

Sugar Reduction Plan - day 4!

So I guess I’m on day 4 of sugar reduction plan. I thought to myself today - “Am I really all done with ice cream, cupcakes, candy, lollipops, cookies…” and yet I have made such a change before, when I went on a gluten-free diet. However, when I went gluten free I really just substituted that with gluten free versions. I gave up pizza and started having gluten free pizza. A lot of the gluten free replacement products are sugary and refined starch but at least they do not cause gastrointestinal distress.

Life really can change, habits can change, and one of the most notable ways I have noticed that people can change is changing what goes into their bodies, be it drugs or food. I have not been bike-commuting since I began the sugar crash plan because I want to focus on that and not put extra stress on myself at this time, since I often feel like I should eat more when I exercise to keep my blood sugar up. (And for some other reasons.) I started riding my bike when my older car died and I didn’t really have money to buy another. Now I have another car and it's pretty great, so I don’t really have as much motivation to bike, though I can. Of course, I didn’t really lose much weight when I was biking every day. Probably because it takes so much energy to burn calories that a 3 mile bike ride isn’t enough exercise to lose weight if you are eating too many calories to begin with. I believe it may have helped lower my blood pressure however and I believe exercise is good for health even if you do not lose weight.

The human body is designed to get somewhat fat and we are very efficient users of energy. (Pontzer H. 2015. Energy expenditure in humans and other primates: a new synthesis. Annual Review of Anthropology. 44:169-187) We are the fattest of the great apes, even when we are athletic.

Cunnane SC, Crawford MA (2003). Survival of the fattest: fat babies were the key to the evolution of the large human brain. Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A 136:17-26.
Clearly we have a knack for survival via storage of energy as body fat, and we use a few calories very efficiently, and this has been turned against us in a modern capitalist food environment. We developed the need for increased energy when we started getting smarter and bigger brains.

Waking up from a sugar addicted haze means realizing the businesses that are making huge profits off the population are not in it for your happiness. A spoonful of sugar IS the medicine going down. Added sugar helps taste and habitual use of foods, so the consumer makes it their custom to keep buying and consuming. In the historical environment for humans, sugar was rare, and now it is in many foods, even ones that do not taste sweet.
Perhaps we will discover that the need for a lot of exercise is also a myth and a way for business to make money selling gym memberships and equipment.

NEW SONG

Giving Up Sugar?

I'm trying to give up sugar.

I continue to doubt I will be able to keep up this no sugar policy but perhaps my doubt is a kind of hope for reverse psychology to work on myself.

I want to get at the truth and not some fad diet. Not "make the theory fit the data".
"Hey everybody you've got to do the same diet as me! I'm a beliver and I will convert you to my new religion!"
Is a religious attitude the only way for humans to stick with something?
Would less sugar make me mellower? sadder? less energetic?
Is there really ever a time that "sugar would help"?
Will the weekend suck without sugar? Will that go away in time?
Is sugar one of my main sources of happiness in life? I hope not!

All fruits and veggies are better when at room temp or warmer.

New record ORION SUNRISE. I think I have decided my favourite form of music is progressive rock. GO on and hate me if you must. Its not a very popular genre.

Well in my case maybe a sort of funky computer prog rock.

Good by sweet Prince - thank goodness your music will remain with us.
